Disposition:
- A note: Albert is a bundle of contradictions. Be prepared.
- Philanthropist: At his core, Albert cares greatly for the well-being of others, and has a good heart. As a young noble, Albert visited orphanages to read to and play with the children there. His soon-to-be brother William's genius and drive made Albert convince his family to adopt both William and Louis. He cares deeply for people in general, and he offered his life, wealth, and resources--and ultimately his own peace--in exchange for helping William try to reform Britain. All for the betterment of the lives of people less fortunate than himself. Along with that, he's largely selfless, thinking of William's cause rather than his own interests. He lives in service to the cause in the name of others, having sacrificed his happiness and self-respect for the furthering of their goals.
- Fractured: While Albert is wholly devoted to their cause, he has little peace because of it. In the future, he will choose to take all of the burdens of their crimes upon himself, refusing pardon and having himself locked in the Tower of London. He sees himself as the true facilitator of and catalyst for William's plans. When he killed his biological brother with his own hands, the light in his eyes died. The deal with the devil he made with William in exchange for them being free to pursue their goals was to adopt the resolve to kill. In "Scandal", he even reveals that the first several times he was party to murder, he'd become ill from the act. He rarely smiles with any joy, laughs sparingly, always wears a mask of placid acceptance and pleasant courteousness. But every crime they commit weighs on him, and he believes wholeheartedly that he is sacrificing his own interests for the greater good. He is right, but not righteous.
- Capable and intelligent: His ambition toward the cause leads him through soldiers' ranks and into top secret organization MI6, which he eventually becomes head of. He is skilled at strategizing operations, thinking with a cool and clear head. His subordinates are sworn to assist William, and Albert has a discerning eye for who can be trusted, and for how to secure their cooperation. Opportunism for personal gains is exceedingly rare. Everything he does is for William's cause and helping to reform British society. Albert even convinces Mycroft Holmes, the Queen's own pawn, to let him operate as he will by showing off his prowess and by being devoted to an ideal that benefits the masses. He's also socially adept, able to navigate high society parties and events with ease, well-versed in fellow nobles' business and able to keep a charming, pleasant appearance up at all necessary times. Albert is highly intelligent and has a sharp wit, able to easily help William make and execute complex plans. Canon cites excellent scholarship as a younger man, but the fact that he can keep up with and lead MI6 says as much. It also means that he's skilled at manipulating and convincing people, when it comes time to do so.
- Dry Humor: Perhaps because of all of this, Albert's sense of humor is a little odd. He seems to take genuine joy in giving Colonel Moran a hard time, often needling at him and picking tiny arguments with turns of phrase or orders the other man doesn't agree with. It seems to be good-natured antagonism, as Moran is valuable to William and Albert wouldn't really wrong him severely. Hardly anyone else is a target of his wit and playful rudeness. He is quickest to laugh over deep irony, such as when he discovers the waters he's wading into politically and socially are particularly and conspicuously muddied. He isn't one to crack actual jokes; rather his humor is more sarcastic and reactionary.
Suitability: The setting may not challenge him in traditional ways. He's a fighter, so any scuffles that come up he'll handle capably. However, he'll find it difficult to adjust to having a life that isn't mired in death and centered around planning murders. Espionage skills and a generally high level of intelligence mean he'll settle into investigating the world and be curious about its inner workings. Undoubtedly, he'll try to find a way to be in something governmental or that has to do with law enforcement or protecting others in a more general sense. Mentally, he's strong, if only because he's so closed off. The real challenges will come if anyone can convince him to be more human, and less of a criminal mastermind. In canon, he's wholly motivated by William's cause... here, he'll have to find his own reason to live and move forward. It might actually do him some good.
Addendum:
- Synchrony and the need for Manna generation aren't going to be terribly easy on him on one level, mainly because he doesn't get that close to people as a matter of course; he's secretive, and for good reason. However, canon does repeatedly call him out as charming, so I think his "for the greater good" mentality will couple with that and mean that he'll make necessary sacrifices in order to advance the greater cause and/or his own causes, whatever the situation may call for. He doesn't rely on being sincere in his physical affections; in canon he'll kiss a lady's hand, no problem.
- As for significant, real bonds... He's made those at home with the Moriarty crew, even if his heart is fairly hidden away. It stands to reason that he, wanting to be more than just a killer and deliverer of retribution (as shown in the final chapters), would actually want to leave things behind and start a new, fresh set of connections. His capacity to reset who he is is evident in his interactions in MI6, as well as with how he reinvents the family image as he grows up, and with how he flat-out acts (as in acting) as "James Moriarty", especially in the Scandal arc.
- Physical transformations won't alarm him nearly as much as they should, because he kind of sees himself as monstrous in a way already. He's also highly adaptable just in general. Mental changes will be taxing, but bearable; he's able to endure an awful lot, as he does in canon by hiding how gentle he is and how much he hates killing behind a cold, placid mask. Anything that exposes his past (at home) or darker aspects of his nature will strain him, as he'll be very much looking forward to having a good public image.
